Deputy Secretary-General's remarks at the Opening of the 4th Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) Summit [as delivered]

“It’s climate crunch time” when it comes to tackling rising carbon emissions, the UN Secretary-General said at the American Natural History Museum in New York on Wednesday, stressing that while the need for global action is unprecedented, so too are the opportunities for prosperity and sustainable development.

Five years on, the reinvigorated Resident Coordinator system has become the beating heart of the UN’s development efforts. Together, we have realized the vision of the historic development system reforms. And the dividends are tangible.

The world faces multiple complex interconnected challenges. And Africa is being hit hard by a devastating series of global shocks, and their impact on our people, environment and economies.

The Asia-Pacific region has demonstrated how a long-term vision can be transformed into reality. We know that more and better progress is possible – if we mobilize at speed, at scale; and if we do so together.

The UN chief spoke about climate justice, reform of the financial system, the upcoming Summit of the Future, and the need for renewed multilateralism in an increasingly multipolar world.
