Resident Coordinators and the Decade of Action

The world is in the midst of a “decade of transformation”- making the radical shifts needed to ensure a just, equitable and sustainable future for all. 

Delivering on this promise of transformation demands a renewed and reinvigorated UN development system.  As a result of sweeping reforms, independent, impartial and empowered Resident Coordinators, are leading UN teams’ response on the ground in 162 countries around the world to access much needed financing for sustainable development, supporting country efforts to improve lives and livelihoods and protect our only planet.  

The leadership and coordination by the UN Resident Coordinators have been instrumental in: 

• Increasing integrated policies for sustainable development and building resilience to shocks 

• Better linkages of UN expertise at all levels to serve country needs  

• More and stronger partnerships with governments and development partners 

• Improving access to flexible funding for joined-up action and leveraging of SDG financing 

• Increasing accountability and transparency for sustainable development results
