A young dreamer who fled her country to save her life now fights to protect other women and girls in Costa Rica.

Together with governments and partners, UN country teams worldwide are working to help protect the safety and security of communities, particularly those facing humanitarian crisis. Teams are stepping up their effort to obtain more essential lifesaving supplies and shelter for those most at-risk. We highlight some of the coordinated efforts.

The United Nations agencies, funds and programmes in Argentina were immediately deployed at the onset of COVID-19 as the UN recognized the health, economic and social implications this virus would have in the country. 

The global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion people by 2050, which will significantly increase the demand for food. The steady increase in hunger since 2014, after a decade of progress, indicates that there is a need to accelerate and scale-up action to strengthen the resilience and adaptability of food systems and livelihoods. 

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, the UN country team in Venezuela and “El Sistema”, the National System of Youth and Children´s Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela, launched the contest “Composing Your Future”, which invited musicians between the ages of 18 and 30 to compose a piece in the symphonic and choral-symphonic genre, inspired by the central theme of “The Future We Want”. 

Last week, the world celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child. Progress for adolescent girls has not kept pace with the realities they face today, and COVID-19 has reinforced many of these gaps. Data shows women and girls are especially vulnerable in the face of COVID-19. UN teams across the globe recognize the urgency to protect and support women and girls, especially right now, and are taking every measure to do so.

As part of its work towards ending child marriage and gender-based violence in Niger, the Spotlight Initiative partners with young women activists in Niger to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child.

To track the UN response efforts, the UN development system established centralized data collecting and reporting systems: the new COVID-19 data portal and UN INFO. These systems allow teams to collect, analyze and report on key indicators of their work related to the SDGs and COVID-19 response, including the number of people served. 

To measure the socioeconomic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the poorest population of the Dominican Republic and improve the joint response and recovery efforts, the United Nations system conducted a Socio-Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA).

One million lives have been lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In partnership with local and national authorities, partners and civil society, UN teams continue to fight COVID-19 with the same continued ferocity and commitment. Today, we highlight some of their efforts across the globe.
