Now is the time for a global plan to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are woefully off-track halfway towards their 2030 deadline

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the HLPF, takes place at the mid-point in pursuit of the 2030 Agenda and focuses on ways to accelerate the global recovery.

A snapshot from 5 countries - Cambodia, Comoros, Mexico, Uzbekistan, Yemen - and how they're moving the needle on the five SDGs under review at the UN High-Level Political Forum this week.

UNICEF, in partnership with UN-Habitat, began joint rehabilitation works in several schools to provide children a safe environment to learn. Othayma’s school in Nashabieh town, rural Damascus, was one of them.

Coupled with other extreme weather events, the ongoing drought caused widespread hunger and pushed thousands into near famine-like conditions. In the south of the country, where the land is arid and households more dependent on rain-fed agriculture, the issue of malnutrition is particularly acute. Crops are not only suffering from a lack of water, but have also been damaged by high winds and tiomena – sandstorms - which blow away the fertile topsoil. In these conditions, communities are struggling to grow key staples, including corn. 

The Sixth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development brings together more than 1,000 participants, between government delegates and representatives of international and United Nations System organizations, the private sector, academia and civil society, convened under the banner of “Accelerating the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.”

Organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) from 27 to 30 March, the Forum brought together a cross-section of key development actors, including senior government and UN officials, the private sector, youth and civil society representatives to share their experiences and mobilize regional action to rescue the SDGs.
