Communications and Advocacy

A new era of global public engagement and communication is manifest. On the one hand, the world is more connected, and more data is available on a range of development and human rights issues. On the other hand, the development agenda is increasingly technical and complex – making it hard for rights holders to engage in development policy discussions and activities. Communications and advocacy which engage governments, organizations and rights holders in a constructive dialogue to advance sustainable development is needed more than ever. To engage people in the new agenda, the post-2015 development context will require strong UNDG communications and advocacy efforts at country level.

Webinars

Communicating as One: Designing, developing and managing a One UN website

This webinar aims to show how a One UN website can help UN country teams communicating their work on delivering results together. The presentation tries to address the key aspects to consider before setting up a One UN site: writing content, selecting visuals and managing the site in the future.

“Communicating As One: Sharing Experiences, removing bottlenecks”

This webinar is aimed at sharing country successes, answering country teams questions, and helping to remove bottlenecks to better joint communications and advocacy.

UN Country Teams should now be familiar with the Guide to Communicating As One, a key pillar of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Countries Adopting the ‘Delivering As One’ Approach. Communicating As One is an imperative for coherent messaging and advocacy. And, as we gear up for the rollout of the Sustainable Development Goals, it will be critical for mobilizing support for the new agenda.  How successful have you been at creating joint communications strategies and establishing a country-level Communications Group — two core elements of the SOPs? What challenges have you encountered?

A week before the gavel drops: Raising public awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals

This webinar features Yoka Brandt and Yannick Glemarec, co-chairs of the Communications and Advocacy Working Group. They highlight the purpose of the working group and discuss how communications and advocacy strategies are key to implementing and supporting the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and the 2030 agenda.

Additional speakers from the Department of Public Information, the Post-2015 Hub, and the UN Development Programme further expand on SDG communications materials, localisation of the goals, and UN events leading up to the General Assembly adoption. Communications and advocacy efforts will be the driving force in sustaining momentum through 2030 and successfully achieving the SDGs.

“Communicating the SDGs: Guidance for UN Country Teams”

Held Thursday 13 August 2015 in New York, USA, this webinar is a short briefing to UN Country teams and provides guidance on how to communicate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It features presentations from the Department of Public Information (Francyne Harrigan), the Post-2015 Hub (Nelson Muffuh) and the Millennium Campaign (Mitchell Toomey).
