The UNDG LAC’s works to enhance the UN System-wide coherence at the regional level, and assist UN country teams in delivering effective support to promote sustainable development in the region through nationally-led and owned processes.

The UNDG LAC provides strategic guidance, analysis, and policy support and advice to Resident Coordinators and UN country teams in the region for the achievement of country level results. The UNDG LAC also plays a key role in strengthening partnerships with regional organizations such as CELAC and CARICOM.

Overall, the work of the organization is guided by the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review of the General Assembly of UN operational activities for development and the UNDG Strategic Priorities.

The UNDG LAC has been carrying out substantive work through its thematic Interagency Working Groups (IAWGs), which provide technical advice to UN country teams. These groups, and their respective Task Teams, receive guidance and report to the UNDG LAC, and is chaired at the director-level. Current UNDG LAC interagency working groups are:

  1. Sustainable Development/SDGs Working Group – which includes the Youth Task Team and SSC Community of Practice
  2. Human Rights Working Group – which includes the Indigenous/Afro-descendant Task Team and the Protection Task Team
  3. Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
  4. UNAIDS Cosponsors Regional Group 
  5. Programme Support Group – which includes the Monitoring and Evaluation Task Team
  6. Regional Operations Management Team
