UNSDG and the 2030 Agenda

In 2015, UN Member States came together to commit and act for the Sustainable Development Goals, securing a future of prosperity and peace for people and planet, leaving no one behind. With only seven years left to go for 2030, the world needs all hands on deck, working together and working faster, at scale.

The UN Sustainable Development Group, of which the UN Development Coordination Office is the Secretariat, and the UN Country Teams, work to  coordinate the development activities of UN entities, funds and programmes.

The objective is to ensure sustained partnerships that boost countries’ social, economic and environmental gains at the national and local levels, with a reinvigorated, empowered and independent Resident Coordinator (RC) system at its helm.

Half-time to 2030

For the first time in decades, development progress is backsliding under the combined impacts of climate change, conflicts, economic slowdown and lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. But all hope is not lost.

From helping communities access social protection to driving larger economic transformation, promoting gender equality, climate action and much more, learn how UN teams have been driving SDG results at the country level in 2022 here

Resident Coordinators at the Helm

The UN Secretary-General has called for a ‘decade of transformation’ to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.  To make the most of UN’s expertise at the global, regional and country levels, impartial and empowered Resident Coordinators have been leading UN teams to support countries to catalyze and accelerate sustainable development.

Working closely with governments and the development community, Resident Coordinators are helping countries invest in key transitions across energy, nature, food systems, digital, education, decent jobs and social protection, among other issues.

The Way Forward

Unless we take urgent action now, the 2030 Agenda will become no more than an epitaph for a world that might have been.

The 2023 SDG Summit is a vital opportunity to move from rhetoric to action, and to reaffirm the countries’ collective commitments to the Goals. This Summit is a defining moment to urgently put the world back on track to achieving the SDGs.

To inspire people to act for the Sustainable Development Goals, the Act Now campaign offers simple actions that everyone can take to accelerate progress on the Goals and create better lives on a healthier planet. Sign up and take action now.
